These California Sushi Rolls with Pears are a fun spin on traditional California rolls with a sweet and salty
flavor that everyone will love. Kids will enjoy spreading the rice and rolling up the sushi.
Sushi Ingredients:
- 8 sushi nori sheets
- 2 cups cooked sushi rice (see recipe below)
- 1 ripe pear, thinly sliced
- 1 avocado, thinly sliced
- 1 English cucumber, thinly sliced
- 1 large carrot, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Sesame seeds (optional)
Sushi Rice Ingredients:
- 2 cups short-grain sushi rice
- 2 1/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Sushi Rice Instructions:
- Rinse the sushi rice in a fine-mesh strainer until the water runs clear.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and water. Let it soak for 30 minutes.
- Bring the rice and water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan.
- Simmer for 18 minutes, then remove from heat and let it sit covered for an additional 10 minutes.
- In a small saucepan, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat over low heat until the sugar and salt dissolve.
- Transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and pour the vinegar mixture over it. Use a rice paddle or wooden spoon to gently mix and coat the rice with the vinegar.
- Let the rice cool to room temperature before using it for sushi rolls.
Sushi Roll Instructions:
- Lay a sushi nori sheet on a flat surface. Spread a thin layer of cooked sushi rice on top, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top of the sheet. Have a small bowl of water nearby to help spread the rice without it sticking too much to your fingers.
- Place a row of sliced pears, avocados, and cucumbers on top of the rice, about 1 inch from the bottom of the sheet.
- Roll up the sushi tightly, using a bamboo mat or your hands to help shape it. Use a bit of water to seal the edge of the sheet.
- Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make 4 rolls.
- Slice each roll into 6-8 pieces using a sharp knife.
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce and honey to create a savory-sweet sauce for the sushi rolls.
- Serve the sushi rolls with dipping on the side for dipping. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
