USA Pears on the Menu in Dubai

Dubai is a growing tourist destination, with a seemingly constant stream of new hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls.  The Burj Khalifa just opened in January 2010: the tallest building in the world at 2,717 feet.  The new development surrounding the building contains 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 160 restaurants and the Dubai Mall (largest mall in the world – 1,200 stores!). With so many hotels and restaurants, the culinary opportunities are endless!  USA Pears recently became a proud member of The Emirates Culinary Guild, the association for professional chefs in the UAE, headquartered in Dubai. We recently invited chefs from the Guild to a training seminar in Dubai.  After a classroom-style introduction to our delicious USA Pears, we set the chefs loose in the kitchen to experiment and create their own culinary masterpieces. USA Green and Red Anjou are the most common varieties in Continue reading

Everyone Deserves a Ripe Pear

In Southest Asia, it’s only natural that people are more used to the Asian pear varieties, which are more crunchy than our USA Pears.  So we offer samples, hand out brochures, and use signs – like the one above from Taiwan – to teach shoppers in supermarkets and fruit shops how to Check the Neck for ripeness so that they can properly enjoy a sweet, juicy USA Pear.  Gently press the neck of the pear with your thumb, and when it slightly yields, it’s ready to eat! Notice that Perry is checking a Red Anjou pear – not a coincidence for Taiwan.  The red USA Pear varieties – mostly Red Anjou and Starkrimson – are unique and becoming more and more popular in Taiwan due to their auspicious color.  Red is lucky in many Southeast Asian countries, especially around Chinese Continue reading

One Week, 4 Countries, Multi-Varieties!

I spent last week visiting some of our markets in Central America, starting south and working my way north, one country per day:  Panama City, Panama; San Jose, Costa Rica; San Salvador, El Salvador; and Guatemala City, Guatemala. I saw many delicious-looking USA Pears in all of the markets, and the quality of the fruit is outstanding, especially considering the long journey required to arrive!  The most popular variety is usually the Green Anjou, followed by Red Anjou and Bosc.  This year there is also interest in trying the smaller varieties, like Forelle and Seckel.  The more varieties, the better!  It’s great to see shoppers introduced to all the different flavors that USA Pears have to offer.  (Side note: you must go to your own grocery store and pick up as many varieties of USA Pears that they have, then Continue reading

A Pear in Provence

This month, while traveling through the Provence region of France, specifically the Côtes du Rhône wine region, I had the opportunity to taste magnificent food, delicate wines, and absorb the gourmet culture of the French countryside. There, the French have a particular way of enjoying life: fresh fruits and vegetables from open air markets, a healthy dose of wine, and a slower pace. The climate is perfect for growing Mediterranean fruits – warm, fairly dry, and sun-baked. Provençal wines are frequently paired with fruits grown in the region – pears, melons, apricots, etc. Pairing fruit with wine has been a worldwide tradition for centuries; pears, for instance, are a nice combination with red, white, or rosé wines, and are exceptionally pleasant matched with dessert wines. In addition to the benefit for your palate, a moderate amount of wine has particular Continue reading

Meet Israel’s “Pear Man”

In Israel, he’s known as “The Pear Man.”  He gets stopped on the street with questions and stories about USA Pears and pear recipes.  Much to his surprise, he has even had his voice recognized over the phone – “Hey, aren’t you the Pear Man?” His name is Yuval Bar-Ner, and he is our USA Pears representative in Israel.  So how did he become so recognizable when our representatives are usually known for working behind the scenes with supermarkets and fruit shops?  Well, Yuval is the host of his very own TV cooking show, where he features recipes that use our favorite ingredient: USA Pears, of course! Yuval insists that everyone try this recipe – it’s both simple and delicious!   Fish & Pear Chips  Pear Chips 2 Firm USA Bosc Pears – skin on 2 teaspoons cornstarch  Remove the Continue reading
