School’s Out for Summer

The school year officially ended Saturday. With so many seniors trekking out on their career paths, I spent countless hours conducting “exit interviews” to assess their knowledge, goals, and to say goodbye.  I’m sad to see so many leave, but I am excited to see how far they go! In one particular meeting, a student said to me, “I still remember the very first thing you taught me: Nobody ever got fat eating fruits and vegetables.” This is a direct quote and principle I teach again and again. If my students learned anything, I hope this was it!

We all need an overall nutritious diet high in fruits and veggies for a better, healthier life. Not only can they help you maintain a healthful weight, but they are dense in nutrients and phytonutrients that help fight off a majority of chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Summer is the perfect time to add more fresh fruits and veggies to your diet; start by perusing your local grocery store or farmers’ market, checking out new recipes, and experimenting. Remember, a healthful diet starts with fresh fruits and veggies. Happy, healthy summer!

About Amy Kweller MS, RD

As a Registered Dietitian, I have a professional relationship with pears. But as someone who loves great food, I also have a personal relationship with pears! So there is no better way to spend my time than blogging about this lovely fruit. I will blog about pears from farm to table; healthy living, cooking, and recipes; the therapeutic benefits of pears and a wholesome diet; and how pears can fit into your lifestyle. I have a background in clinical and community nutrition, and teaching others how to lead healthy, fulfilling lives is my goal and passion – so send me your questions. My hope is that everyone who visits this site will find something that lingers long after the browser closes, and I expect that will be a deeper love of pears!
